 Abstract nouns
The rule:
1. As a general rule  abstract nouns are used without an article.

Example: Knowledge is power. Nothing succeeds as success.

Here we are talking about notions in g e n e r a l.

2. The definite article is used with abstract nouns when the situation makes the idea definite.

Example: The knowledge you get at school is less important than the skills you get.

Here we are talking about this particular situation.

3. a) The indefinite article is used with abstract nouns when they express a certain kind of quality. In this case, the nouns are often accompanied by descriptive adjectives.

Example: She has a working knowledge of Spanish. He was filled with a hate he had never felt before.

b) The indefinite article is also used with abstract uncountable
nouns when they slightly change their meaning.

Example: His plan was a success.
